Newport Beach with Kids

Newport Beach family activities make this one of the best coastal destinations for kids. It has the infrastructure of a well-funded coastal city β€” Newport Beach family friendly beaches, clean parks, organized water activities β€” combined with genuinely special experiences you can't replicate elsewhere. The ferry crossing, the frozen banana tradition, and tide pools that make kids suddenly interested in marine biology are all legitimately memorable.

The harbor adds a dimension most beach towns don't have: calm, protected water for kids to kayak or paddle, boat parades to watch, and the Fun Zone's harbor Ferris wheel. Newport Beach is also compact enough that you can anchor at one good property and cover most of it without long drives.

What Kids Actually Love Here

Balboa Island Ferry

Ages: All ages

A real car ferry for $1.25. Three minutes across the harbor. Kids love the novelty of driving onto a boat. Lands on Balboa Island, steps from the frozen banana shops.

Frozen Banana Tradition

Ages: All ages

Sugar 'n Spice vs. Dad's Donuts β€” both on Marine Avenue, both claiming to have invented it in the 1940s. Get both and make kids pick sides. The Balboa Bar (ice cream on a stick, dipped in chocolate) is equally good.

Balboa Fun Zone

Ages: 5–14 especially

Ferris wheel over the harbor, bumper boats, arcade, small carousel. Not a theme park β€” a neighborhood amusement spot with 90 years of history and genuinely good harbor views from the Ferris wheel top.

Tide Pools at Little Corona

Ages: 4+ with supervision

Little Corona del Mar Beach at low tide exposes rocky reefs with sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, and the occasional octopus. Check a tide chart and arrive one hour before low tide. Wear shoes you can get wet.

Whale Watching

Ages: 6+ recommended

Newport Landing and Davey's Locker both run family-friendly 2.5-hour tours from the harbor. Dolphin sightings (often hundreds in a pod) are nearly guaranteed year-round. Gray whales December–April; blue and humpback whales June–November.

Crystal Cove Beach

Ages: All ages

Cleaner and quieter than the main peninsula beaches. Historic 1920s cottages to explore, tide pools nearby, and an iconic roadside Shake Shack on PCH with date shakes and burgers that kids (and adults) love.

Newport Dunes Waterfront

Ages: Under 12 especially

Protected lagoon with calm water, paddleboat and kayak rentals, a sandy beach with zero wave action, and a resort atmosphere. The safest water environment for young kids in Newport Beach.

Fashion Island

Fashion Island is Newport Beach's main shopping destination β€” a 1.2 million square foot open-air center with over 200 stores, anchored by Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom. It's well-maintained, palm-lined, and noticeably more relaxed than indoor malls. The restaurant mix here is one of the best of any shopping center in Orange County.

Anchor Stores

Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Macy's

Luxury

Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Rolex

Casual & Lifestyle

Apple, Anthropologie, Lululemon, H&M

Dining

Nobu, Puesto, True Food Kitchen, Modo Mio

πŸ’‘
Parking at Fashion Island is free β€” large multi-story and surface lots surround the center. No validation needed. On weekend evenings it fills up near the restaurant entrances, but the perimeter spots are almost always open.

Fashion Island sits on Jamboree Road in the Newport Center area β€” about 10–15 minutes from the Balboa Peninsula by car. It's an easy half-day combined with dinner at one of the restaurants that doesn't require a cross-town drive.

Local Shopping: CdM, Balboa Village & Lido

If you'd rather browse independent shops than department stores, Newport Beach has strong neighborhood retail in three areas.

Corona del Mar (PCH & Marguerite)

CdM's commercial strip along PCH and the cross streets has a genuine village feel β€” boutique clothing, home decor, jewelry, and a strong restaurant scene. It's walkable, independent-heavy, and less tourist-focused than the peninsula. Besems, The Garden, and multiple independent jewelers and clothing boutiques populate the two-block stretch.

Balboa Island (Marine Avenue)

Marine Avenue is compact and eclectic: Sugar 'n Spice, Dad's Donuts, Balboa Candy, Blue Atlas Marketplace for coastal gifts and decor, Sundance Thrift Shop for vintage finds. The shopping here is more experience than errand β€” you're on a charming island, not a strip mall.

Lido Marina Village

A curated upscale shopping area on the harbor at Newport Boulevard and Via Lido. Small footprint but high quality β€” boutique clothing, home goods, and waterfront dining. Velvet by Graham & Spencer, Rag & Bone, and Salt & Straw ice cream are among the tenants. Nice waterfront walking area between stops.
