A scenic waterfront promenade stretching several miles along San Diego Bay. Free, open all day, with USS Midway views, public art, parks, and harbor activity. The best free thing to do downtown.
USS Midway Museum
An aircraft carrier museum docked at the Embarcadero. Explore the flight deck, cockpits, and below-deck areas. Tickets around $30–$35 per adult. Worth 2–3 hours. One of the most popular attractions in San Diego.
Petco Park — Padres Games
Catch a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park in the East Village. The stadium itself is excellent — great food, downtown skyline views, and a fun atmosphere. Tours available on non-game days. Even non-baseball fans enjoy the experience.
Ferry to Coronado
The San Diego Bay Ferry departs from the Embarcadero. About 15 minutes to Coronado, where you'll find one of the best beaches in Southern California. Round trip is approximately $8–10. A perfect half-day escape from downtown.
Harbor Cruise
Harbor cruises show the downtown skyline and USS Midway from the water. Multiple operators run 1–2 hour tours. A great way to see the city from a different angle, especially around sunset.
Balboa Park & San Diego Zoo
About 10 minutes from downtown. Free grounds with beautiful gardens, Spanish Colonial architecture, and over a dozen museums. The San Diego Zoo is also here. Allow at least a half day.
Neighborhoods to Explore
Downtown San Diego has distinct neighborhoods, each with their own character. Walking between them is part of the experience.
Gaslamp Quarter
The historic 16-block nightlife and dining district. Walk 5th Avenue between Market and J Streets for the best restaurants, bars, and people-watching. It's still the main nightlife hub and the energy is great on weekend evenings. Some spots lean tourist pricing but the atmosphere is worth it.
Little Italy
A lively Italian-vibe neighborhood with patio cafes, shops, and the Piazza della Famiglia plaza. India Street is worth walking for food and coffee spots. The Little Italy Mercato Saturday farmers market is a fun local scene with fresh produce and vendors.
East Village & Petco Park
The area around Petco Park has evolved into a walkable neighborhood with breweries, restaurants, and urban energy. Game days bring the best atmosphere, but the area is worth exploring any time. Petco Park tours are available on non-game days.
Marina District & Embarcadero
The waterfront district with harbor parks, the USS Midway, and the ferry terminal. The most scenic part of downtown for a casual walk or a sunset stroll along the bay.

4th of July in Downtown San Diego
Downtown is the front row for San Diego's Fourth of July. The Big Bay Boom, one of the largest fireworks shows in the country, goes off right over the bay, and the whole Embarcadero turns into the viewing gallery. The details below hold most years, but confirm the current schedule before you go.
The Big Bay Boom (after dark)
The Big Bay Boom launches from barges positioned across San Diego Bay, typically around 9 p.m. on July 4th, off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the North Embarcadero, and the Coronado Ferry Landing. The display is choreographed to a soundtrack broadcast on local radio and runs roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Because it fires from multiple barges at once, the downtown bayfront gives you the fullest view.
Where to watch
- The Embarcadero and the waterfront near the USS Midway
- Seaport Village and the Marina District
- Shelter Island and Harbor Island
- Coronado Ferry Landing across the bay
A simple 4th of July day
Spend the day on the water or in Balboa Park, then head to the bayfront in the late afternoon to claim a spot. Grab dinner in the Gaslamp or at Seaport Village before the crowds peak, bring a blanket, and settle in along the Embarcadero by 8 p.m. Tune a radio to the broadcast soundtrack so the show is synced, and you're set.
4th of July weekend
Stay walkable to the bayfront.
Our San Diego rentals put you within reach of the Embarcadero and the Big Bay Boom, so you can walk to the show and skip the parking scramble. The holiday books out fast, so lock in your dates.
Check availabilityComic-Con in Downtown San Diego
For four days in late July (July 23 to 26 in 2026; confirm current-year dates), Comic-Con International takes over downtown and turns it into the center of the pop culture universe. Badges sell out long before the show, but here's the part most visitors don't realize: you don't need one to have a great Comic-Con trip.
What's happening, badge or not
The convention itself fills the convention center on the bayfront, but the show spills out into the Gaslamp Quarter and the surrounding blocks. Pop-up experiences from studios and streamers, themed bar takeovers, outdoor activations, and cosplay on every corner, most of it free and open to the public. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip.
Where to be
- The Gaslamp Quarter, the heart of the free outdoor scene
- The blocks around the convention center for activations and people-watching
- The Embarcadero and Seaport Village when you need air
- Little Italy for dinner away from the crowds
Logistics that matter
Places to stay book out months ahead and prices peak, so lock in dates early. Don't drive into the core: streets close, garages fill, and the trolley or walking beats a car all week. Restaurants around the Gaslamp get slammed, so book dinner ahead or eat in Little Italy. And wear real shoes, because a Comic-Con day is miles on foot.
Comic-Con week
Walk to the show, skip the parking.
Our San Diego rentals put you within reach of the Gaslamp and the convention center. Comic-Con dates go first, so lock yours in early.
