Ocean Beach — Classic Beach Town (~15 Min)

Ocean Beach is a laid-back, classic Southern California beach community about 15 minutes southwest of Old Town. It has real ocean waves, a fishing pier, tide pools, and that authentic surf-town energy that San Diego is known for.

  • Water conditions: Ocean waves. Good for surfing, boogie boarding, and experienced swimmers. Lifeguards on duty during summer.
  • Activities: Surfing, tide pooling at the south end, fishing from the OB Pier, walking the boardwalk, and browsing Newport Avenue shops.

San Diego River Path — Water-Adjacent Without Driving

If you want a water-adjacent outdoor experience without leaving the Old Town area, the San Diego River path is accessible nearby. It is a paved multi-use trail along the riverbank that offers pleasant walking, jogging, and cycling.

This is not a beach or swimming area. But for a morning walk or bike ride with some water views, it is a convenient option steps from Old Town. The path connects to the broader San Diego River Trail system that stretches east toward Mission Valley.

💡
Best use: Morning walk or jog before exploring Old Town Historic Park. The trail is flat, paved, and accessible for all fitness levels.

Parking & Access Tips

  • Mission Bay: Multiple free lots around the bay. South Shores and East Mission Bay Drive lots are usually easiest. Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends.
