South Bay Has More Trails Than Most People Realize

South Bay is known for beaches and border culture β€” but the area has more outdoor options than most visitors expect. Otay Valley Regional Park offers trails with bay and mountain views, the Tijuana River Estuarine Reserve is one of the best birdwatching spots in the county, and the coastal walks in Imperial Beach are flat and scenic year-round.

All are free or very low cost. All have options for beginners and people who want a real workout. And all are genuinely worth the trip beyond the beach.

Otay Valley Regional Park

Otay Valley offers the most varied trail system in South Bay β€” open grassland, river valley paths, and hillside climbs with bay and mountain views. The park spans a large area between Chula Vista and Otay Mesa, giving you a real sense of being away from the coast while still being a short drive from the beach.

πŸ’‘
Parking: Free parking at trailheads. The park is less crowded than coastal trails, so parking is rarely an issue. Bring water β€” shade is limited on the hillside trails.

Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Tijuana River Estuary is a protected wetland reserve near Imperial Beach β€” one of the most important migratory bird stops on the Pacific Flyway. Over 370 bird species have been recorded here, making it one of the best birdwatching spots in the San Diego area.

The trails are flat, easy, and accessible for all skill levels. The reward is not elevation β€” it is proximity. The reserve puts you within feet of herons, egrets, and shorebirds in a peaceful natural setting that feels worlds away from the beach scene.

Otay Mountain Wilderness

Otay Mountain is farther east and a step up in difficulty β€” a wilderness area with higher elevation, different vegetation, and views that feel nothing like the coast. It is doable for experienced hikers looking for a challenge beyond the valley and estuary trails.

Check conditions before going β€” the area can be hot in summer. Bring plenty of water and sun protection. The effort is rewarded with a genuinely different South Bay experience.

Conditions: Otay Mountain can be significantly hotter than the coast. Summer hikes should start early. Fall and spring are the best seasons. Use AllTrails for current trail conditions and GPS routing. Not recommended for beginners.

Coastal Walks β€” Imperial Beach & Silver Strand

Imperial Beach has flat, scenic coastal walks along the strand and pier. The IB Pier walk is a must β€” views of Mexico to the south and the San Diego skyline to the north, completely free. Silver Strand offers a more natural coastal walking experience with state park setting and fewer crowds. Both are accessible year-round and great for sunset walks. The Bayshore Bikeway connects Chula Vista to Coronado along the waterfront β€” ideal for walking, running, or biking with calm bay views.

Trail Tips for South Bay

  • Hike early. Otay Valley and the estuary are noticeably quieter before 9 AM β€” better wildlife sightings, cooler temps, and easy parking.
  • Bring more water than you think you need. The inland trails in Otay Valley and Otay Mountain have limited shade and the sun is strong.
  • Check water quality advisories before combining a hike with beach time at Imperial Beach β€” especially after rain.
  • Ticks are present in the scrub vegetation from spring through fall. Wear long pants or check yourself after hiking in grassland areas.
  • Use the AllTrails app for real-time trail conditions, user photos, and GPS routing β€” Otay Valley and the estuary are well-mapped on it.
  • After a morning hike, head to Imperial Beach for tacos and a pier walk β€” the best way to end an outdoor morning in South Bay.
