The Honest Truth About Uptown Parking

Uptown parking is manageable if you know the rules. Hillcrest has metered zones on busy streets with time limits. North Park's 30th Street area is competitive with limited street spots. Balboa Park has free lots that are easy most days. Residential permit zones exist in some blocks โ€” read every sign to avoid tickets.

The best strategy: park once at your rental or a garage and walk or Uber. Uptown is walkable enough that you should not need to move your car for most restaurant, bar, and Balboa Park trips.

Pride week parking: During San Diego Pride in July, parking in Hillcrest is extremely competitive. Plan to park at your rental and walk or Uber. Street closures affect availability throughout the weekend.

Hillcrest & North Park Street Parking

Hillcrest street parking is metered in busy zones along University Avenue. The meters have time limits, usually 2 hours. Side streets one or two blocks off University Ave are often free and unmetered โ€” this is the local move.

North Park โ€” 30th Street Area

30th Street in North Park is the most competitive parking in Uptown, especially on weekend evenings when the restaurants and bars are busy. Park on the side streets east or west of 30th and walk a block. It rarely takes more than 5 minutes of looking.

South Park & University Heights

These quieter neighborhoods generally have easier parking. Residential streets are mostly free without permits. Check signs for street sweeping days โ€” these are the most common reason visitors get tickets in Uptown.

Read every sign. Residential permit zones exist in some Uptown blocks. Parking without a permit during restricted hours will get you a ticket. When in doubt, look for the posted signs on the block before leaving your car.

Balboa Park Parking

Balboa Park has free parking in several lots. The Inspiration Point lot is the largest and connects to a free tram that runs to the central plaza on busy days. The lot near the Zoo entrance is also free but fills faster on weekends.

Walk from Hillcrest: If you are staying in Hillcrest, you can walk to Balboa Park in 10-15 minutes through the north entrance. Skip parking entirely โ€” this is one of the best advantages of staying in Uptown.

Insider Tips

  • Park once at your rental and walk or Uber. Uptown is walkable โ€” do not drive between Hillcrest and North Park when you can walk it in 20 minutes.
  • Download ParkMobile before you arrive. It works at most Uptown meters and lets you extend time without running back to the car.
  • Side streets one block off University Ave (Hillcrest) and 30th Street (North Park) are your best bet for free parking.
  • During Pride week (July), park at your rental and use Uber/Lyft. Street closures and crowds make driving in Hillcrest impractical.
  • Balboa Park lots are free and rarely full on weekdays. On weekends, arrive before 10 AM or walk from Hillcrest.
  • Street sweeping is the hidden ticket trap. Check signs for the posted schedule on your block โ€” parking on sweeping days is an easy citation.
