Do You Actually Need a Car?

Coronado is one of the most walkable and bikeable areas in San Diego. Once you are on the island, a car is not necessary for most activities — the beach, Orange Avenue, the Ferry Landing, and Glorietta Bay are all within easy walking or biking distance.

The main question is how you get to Coronado in the first place. The ferry from downtown San Diego is scenic and affordable. If you drive, free parking is available along Ocean Boulevard near the beach. A car is only really needed for day trips to Cabrillo National Monument, Tijuana Estuary, or other areas outside the island.

✓ Skip the car if...

  • Staying in Coronado and focusing on beach and village
  • Taking the ferry from downtown San Diego
  • Comfortable with biking or walking the island
  • Using Uber/Lyft for occasional trips off-island

⚑ Get a car if...

  • Planning day trips to Cabrillo National Monument
  • Exploring areas outside Coronado (downtown, La Jolla, etc.)
  • Visiting Silver Strand State Beach (4.5 miles south)
  • Traveling with kids and lots of beach gear
💡
Parking tip: Free parking along Ocean Boulevard near Coronado Beach fills up fast in summer. Orange Avenue has metered street parking with time limits. The Hotel del Coronado has paid parking even for non-guests. Arrive early or take the ferry to skip parking entirely.
