Coronado, San Diego Parking Guide

Free beach parking on Ocean Boulevard, metered spots on Orange Avenue, Hotel del lots, and the ferry strategy to skip parking entirely.

The Honest Truth About Coronado Parking

Coronado parking is easier than most San Diego beach areas. The island has free street parking along Ocean Boulevard at the beach, free residential street parking throughout the island, and metered spots on Orange Avenue. The Hotel del Coronado and Ferry Landing have their own paid lots.

The main challenge is summer weekends when Ocean Boulevard fills up by mid-morning. The best strategies: arrive before 9 AM, park on residential side streets and walk, or skip driving entirely by taking the ferry from downtown San Diego.

โš ๏ธ
Summer weekends: Free Ocean Boulevard spots fill by 9:30-10 AM on summer Saturdays and Sundays. If you are sleeping in, park on a residential street a few blocks inland and walk, or take the ferry from downtown San Diego.

Beach Parking โ€” Ocean Boulevard

Ocean Boulevard runs along Coronado Beach and has free street parking on both sides. This is the primary beach parking for the island. No meters, no fee โ€” just pull up and park.

Strategy 1: Arrive Before 9 AM

On summer weekends, Ocean Boulevard fills by 9:30-10 AM. Arriving before 9 AM guarantees a spot close to the beach. The morning light and empty sand are a bonus โ€” the beach is at its best early.

Strategy 2: Park on Residential Streets

Most residential streets in Coronado have free, unrestricted parking. Park a few blocks inland from the beach and walk. The island is flat and walkable โ€” a 5-10 minute walk from most residential areas to the beach.

Strategy 3: Take the Ferry

Skip parking entirely. The Coronado Ferry from downtown San Diego costs $8-10 round trip and drops you at the Ferry Landing. From there, walk or rent a bike to the beach. This is the best strategy on crowded summer weekends.

๐Ÿ’ก
Silver Strand alternative: Silver Strand State Beach (4.5 miles south) has a paid lot ($10-15/day) and far fewer crowds than Coronado Beach. The beach is just as beautiful with wider sand and more space.

Orange Avenue & Village Parking

Orange Avenue has metered street parking along the main commercial blocks. Pay via the PayByPhone app. Time limits (usually 2 hours) apply on some blocks during business hours.

The easiest move: park on a residential side street one or two blocks off Orange Avenue. These are typically free and unmetered. The village is compact enough that you are never more than a 2-3 minute walk from the shops and restaurants.

โœ“
Evening dining tip: After 6 PM, metered spots on Orange Avenue are generally easier to find. Some meters stop enforcing in the evening โ€” check the posted signs for exact hours.

Hotel del Coronado & Ferry Landing

The Hotel del Coronado has paid parking for visitors โ€” a self-park lot and valet service. If you are just visiting the grounds, shops, and restaurants (all open to the public), you can often find free parking on Ocean Boulevard a short walk south.

Insider Tips

  • Download PayByPhone before you arrive if you plan to park on metered Orange Avenue spots. Add your license plate and card in advance.
  • Bikes solve the parking problem entirely. Rent a beach cruiser on Orange Avenue and ride everywhere on the flat island streets. Park your car once and forget about it.
  • The ferry is a genuine parking alternative, not just a tourist activity. Park in downtown San Diego (often easier) and take the ferry to Coronado for $8-10 round trip.
  • Coronado is flat and walkable. Even if you park several blocks from the beach or village, the walk is easy and pleasant through tree-lined residential streets.
  • For the Hotel del, park free on Ocean Boulevard and walk a few minutes north rather than paying for the hotel lot. The beach walk is part of the experience.
  • Silver Strand State Beach has a paid lot ($10-15/day) but far fewer cars than Ocean Boulevard. Worth the short drive south if Coronado Beach parking is full.
