La Jolla Transportation — Quick Summary
La Jolla is about 15–20 minutes from San Diego International Airport. Within the Village, you can get by entirely without a car — everything is walkable and rideshare is easy. For anything beyond the Village core (Torrey Pines, beach-hopping, day trips), a car makes life easier.
Getting from the Airport to La Jolla
San Diego International (SAN) is the closest airport — 15–20 minutes from La Jolla by car or rideshare in normal traffic. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) typically runs $30–50 from SAN to La Jolla depending on surge and time of day.
Getting Around by Car
A car is helpful but not essential if you stay in the Village. Having one makes beach-hopping (La Jolla Shores, Windansea, Black's Beach) and visiting Torrey Pines significantly easier. For guests staying in University City — more inland, less walkable — a car is more necessary for daily life.
The tradeoff is parking. La Jolla Village parking is competitive and paid on weekends. The LJVMA $5 all-day garage pass (lajollabythesea.com) solves most of it. See the Parking Guide for full details.
Public Transit — MTS Buses
MTS buses serve La Jolla and connect to the broader San Diego transit network. Useful for getting between the Village, La Jolla Shores, and connecting south toward downtown or Mission Valley. Check the MTS trip planner at sdmts.com for current routes and real-time schedules.
Bike & E-Scooter Rentals
Bike and e-scooter rentals are available near La Jolla Shores and the Village. These are a good option for getting between the Shores and the Village without dealing with parking — the flat, coastal route between the two areas is well suited to bikes. Good for a relaxed morning coastal cruise as well.
