La Jolla Parking Guide

The $5 LJVMA all-day village pass, the La Jolla Cove lot, permit zones, and the best strategy for summer weekends — so you don't waste your morning hunting for a spot.

La Jolla Parking — The Numbers

La Jolla has over 2,000 street parking spots plus 4,400 spaces in lots and garages. That sounds like a lot — and it is — but the free street spots are limited and strictly enforced, and the village fills up fast on weekends. The key to not wasting your morning: use the system instead of fighting it.

⚠️
Always read every sign. Time limits, permit zones, and street-cleaning schedules vary block by block in La Jolla. A ticket is faster than you think. When in doubt, use a paid garage.

Street Parking in La Jolla

Free street spots exist throughout La Jolla but they come with caveats — time limits (typically 1–2 hours in high-demand areas), permit zone restrictions, and strict enforcement. The spots near La Jolla Cove and along Prospect Street are the most competitive and the most heavily ticketed.

Standard pay-by-phone apps are used at metered spots. Bring your phone and a backup payment method — meters don't accept all cards everywhere. Always check the posted hours: some restrictions only apply on weekdays or specific hours.

Village Lots & Garages — The $5 LJVMA Pass

The La Jolla Village Merchants Association (LJVMA) offers a $5 all-day discounted parking pass for the village garages. This is the single best parking move in La Jolla. Normal garage rates apply without the pass; on holidays the discounted rate goes to $10 — still a deal compared to circling for street spots.

Buy the pass at lajollabythesea.com before you arrive. Park once in the morning and walk everywhere for the rest of the day. The garages put you within easy walking distance of the Village, La Jolla Cove, and the coastal bluffs.

La Jolla Cove Parking Lot

The La Jolla Cove paid lot is the most convenient parking for the Cove itself — but it's also the most competitive. It fills up fast on weekends and summer mornings, often before 9 AM. If you arrive and it's full, don't waste time circling: buy the LJVMA garage pass and walk the short distance.

⚠️
Cove lot strategy: If the Cove is your first stop, aim to arrive before 8:30 AM on summer weekends. Otherwise, go straight to a village garage with the $5 LJVMA pass — the walk to the Cove is easy and you won't be stressed about your car.

Residential Permit Zones

Residential permit zones are throughout La Jolla — these streets reserve parking for residents with permits during posted hours. Parking in a permit zone without a permit will result in a ticket. The zones are not always obvious; some blocks alternate between permitted and unrestricted.

The rule is simple: read every sign before walking away from your car. If a sign says "Permit Parking Only" with hours posted, you need a permit during those hours — no exceptions. If you're unsure, move to a paid garage.

Summer Weekend Strategy

Summer weekends in La Jolla are the highest-demand parking scenario. The best approach is one of two options: arrive early (before 9 AM for the Cove lot, before 10 AM for street spots), or skip the hunt entirely and buy the $5 LJVMA garage pass and walk.

Option A — Early arrival

Before 8:30 AM for Cove lot. Before 9–10 AM for street spots near the Village.

Option B — Garage pass

Buy the $5 LJVMA pass, park in a village garage, walk everywhere. No stress.

Avoid

Circling Prospect Street after 10 AM on a summer Saturday. It's a time sink.

No shuttle

There is no free shuttle or trolley in La Jolla. Plan to park once and walk.
