Nearest Airports & Honest Drive Times
Two airports serve North County Coastal well. Here's the honest breakdown — realistic drive times, not the optimistic Google estimate.
San Diego International Airport (SAN)
The primary airport for NCC guests. Drive times in normal traffic: Del Mar ~20 min, Encinitas ~30 min, Carlsbad ~35 min, Oceanside ~45 min. Rush hour (7–9 AM, 4–7 PM weekdays) can add 15–20 minutes on I-5. Uber/Lyft from SAN runs roughly $30–$60 depending on your destination city.
McClellan-Palomar Airport (CLD) — Carlsbad
A smaller regional airport right in Carlsbad. Limited commercial flights, but if your airline serves CLD, it puts you directly in the middle of NCC with minimal drive time. Worth checking for regional connections.
| From SAN to... | Normal Traffic | Rush Hour | Uber/Lyft Est. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Del Mar | ~20 min | 30–40 min | $30–$40 |
| Encinitas | ~30 min | 40–50 min | $35–$50 |
| Carlsbad | ~35 min | 45–55 min | $40–$55 |
| Oceanside | ~45 min | 55–70 min | $45–$60 |
Do You Actually Need a Car?
A car is helpful for hopping between NCC's five cities, but not essential if you stay in a walkable village. Each city — Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside — has a walkable core with beaches, restaurants, and shops within reach on foot.
The COASTER train is the game-changer here. It connects Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside along the coast — making it genuinely possible to explore multiple cities without a car. Pair it with rideshare and bike rentals and you have a workable car-free trip.
Skip the car if...
- Staying in one walkable village (Encinitas, Carlsbad Village)
- Using the COASTER train to hop between cities
- Comfortable with Uber/Lyft for occasional trips
- Focused on beach + dining within walking distance
Get a car if...
- Visiting multiple cities in one day
- Going to Legoland, Flower Fields, or lagoon trailheads
- Doing day trips to San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, or Disneyland
- Traveling with kids or lots of beach gear
COASTER Train — Your Best Transit Option
The COASTER is the single most useful transit option for NCC guests. It's a commuter rail line that runs along the coast with stations in Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside — putting you within walking distance of beaches, restaurants, and villages in each city.
Buses & Rideshare
MTS and NCTD buses serve coastal areas, though frequency is limited compared to the COASTER train. Uber and Lyft are available throughout NCC with typical wait times of 5–15 minutes depending on city and time of day.
NCTD Buses
NCTD operates bus routes connecting NCC coastal cities. Frequency varies — some routes run every 30–60 minutes on weekdays with reduced weekend service. Useful for connecting to COASTER stations or reaching areas not on the train line. Check gonctd.com for routes and schedules.
Uber & Lyft
Rideshare is reliable throughout NCC. Standard fares within NCC run $15–$30 depending on distance. Surge pricing can hit 1.5–2x during Del Mar Racing, major events, and late Friday/Saturday nights. Smaller villages like Del Mar and Solana Beach may have slightly longer wait times late at night.

Biking & E-Scooters
Bike and e-scooter rentals are available in the walkable villages — a great way to explore within a single NCC city. Highway 101 runs through all five cities and is bikeable in many stretches, though some sections have heavier traffic than others.
- Bike rentals are available in Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside through local shops along the coast.
- E-scooters are available in some NCC cities — check local availability when you arrive.
- Best for — exploring within a single village, getting to the beach from your rental, and casual coastal rides.
- Not ideal for — hopping between cities (distances are real: Del Mar to Oceanside is 20+ miles).
Day Trip Drive Times from NCC
NCC is well-positioned for day trips to major San Diego attractions and beyond. Here are realistic drive times from the center of the NCC corridor (Encinitas/Carlsbad area).
| Destination | Drive Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Del Mar to Oceanside | 30–40 min | End-to-end NCC drive along I-5 or Hwy 101 |
| San Diego Zoo / Balboa Park | 30–45 min | Via I-5 south; allow extra time for parking |
| Downtown San Diego | 25–50 min | Depends on city; COASTER train is an option |
| San Diego Safari Park | ~45 min | Inland via CA-78 from Oceanside/Carlsbad |
| Disneyland (Anaheim) | ~1.5 hours | Via I-5 north; budget more in summer traffic |
