The Honest Truth About NCC Parking

North County Coastal spans five independent cities — Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas (including Cardiff and Leucadia), Carlsbad, and Oceanside — each with its own parking rules, lots, and enforcement. The good news: parking is generally more manageable here than in packed beach towns further south. The challenge: each city handles it differently.

The universal tips: arrive early in summer, download the PayByPhone app before you get here, and consider the COASTER train as a genuine parking alternative. It serves Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside with stops near the beach areas.

⚠️
Summer weekends: Beach lots at Moonlight Beach (Encinitas) and Del Mar fill by mid-morning on summer Saturdays and Sundays. If you're sleeping in, use the COASTER train or arrive after 4 PM when day visitors start leaving.

Del Mar Parking

Del Mar has paid lots near the beach at $4+ per hour. Free street parking is limited and enforced. The biggest challenge is racing season (July 17 – September 7, 2026) when Del Mar gets very crowded — arrive early or use the shuttle services that run on race days.

⚠️
Racing season tip: Del Mar parking gets significantly worse during racing season. Beach parking still works if you arrive before 8 AM on race days. Otherwise, use the race shuttles or park further out and rideshare in.

Solana Beach Parking

Fletcher Cove has a paid lot plus limited street parking. It's a small lot that fills fast on summer weekends, but Solana Beach is generally less competitive for parking than Del Mar or Encinitas. The COASTER train stops here — a good option if you're visiting the Cedros Design District or Fletcher Cove without wanting to deal with the lot.

Encinitas Parking

Moonlight Beach has the main paid lot — it's the most popular beach in Encinitas and the lot fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. Arrive early for guaranteed parking. Swami's has limited street parking only — arrive early or park a few blocks up on Highway 101 and walk down.

Cardiff State Beach has state beach lot fees with street alternatives available. D Street and Grandview beaches in Leucadia are street parking only — less crowded but also fewer spots.

💡
COASTER option: The Encinitas COASTER station is walkable to downtown Encinitas and Highway 101 — park at a less crowded station and ride in, or take it from your city to skip driving entirely.

Carlsbad Parking

Carlsbad has paid beach lots along Carlsbad State Beach and near Tamarack Beach. Free areas are limited. Carlsbad Village has separate street parking and small lots — generally manageable on weekdays, tighter on weekends.

During the Carlsbad Flower Fields season (March–May), the area near Legoland and the Flower Fields sees extra traffic. Plan for that if you're visiting both attractions.

Oceanside Parking

Oceanside has paid lots near the pier and strand area. Free street options exist further from the pier. Oceanside is generally the easiest NCC city for parking — more space, lower demand than Del Mar or Encinitas.

The COASTER train stops in Oceanside and the station is walkable to the pier area — a convenient option if you're day-tripping from another NCC city.

Insider Tips

  • Download PayByPhone before you arrive — it's the most common parking app across NCC cities. Add your license plate and card in advance.
  • The COASTER train is the best parking hack in NCC. It serves Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside with stops near beach areas. Park once and ride between cities.
  • Arrive before 9 AM on summer weekends for any NCC beach lot. By 10 AM, the most popular lots are full.
  • Del Mar racing season (July–September) makes parking in Del Mar significantly harder. Use shuttles or arrive very early.
  • Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) works well for evening dinners and avoids parking stress entirely in the village areas.
  • If your rental property has assigned parking, use it as your base and take the COASTER or rideshare to explore other cities. Driving between NCC cities is only 10–20 minutes but parking adds stress.
