San Diego River Path
The San Diego River runs near Old Town, and a paved multi-use path follows it through the valley. The path is flat, accessible, and good for walking, jogging, or biking. It connects Old Town to Mission Bay and beyond — you can bike from Old Town to the bay in about 15–20 minutes on a flat, car-free route.
The river path is not a scenic nature trail — it runs through an urban corridor. But it is convenient, free, and a good option for a morning jog or a bike ride to the beach without dealing with car traffic.
Day Trip Hiking (15–20 Min Drive)
Old Town does not have serious hiking trails in the immediate neighborhood, but two excellent options are a short drive away.
Mission Trails Regional Park
About 15–20 minutes east of Old Town. One of the largest urban parks in the country with over 60 miles of trails. The highlight is Cowles Mountain — the highest point in the city of San Diego with 360-degree views from the summit. The climb is about 3 miles round trip, moderate difficulty, and very popular.
- Cowles Mountain: 3 miles round trip, moderate. The most popular hike in San Diego. Start early to avoid crowds and heat.
- Father Junipero Serra Trail: 5 miles, easy-moderate. Follows the Old Mission Dam historic site. More shade and less crowded than Cowles.
- Visitor Center trails: Several easy 1–2 mile loops near the visitor center. Good for families and casual hikers.
Cabrillo National Monument
About 20 minutes southwest of Old Town at the tip of Point Loma. Coastal bluff trails with Pacific Ocean views, tide pools at low tide, and the historic lighthouse. Entry fee per vehicle. The Bayside Trail (2.5 miles round trip, easy-moderate) offers views of the harbor and downtown skyline.
- Bayside Trail: 2.5 miles, easy-moderate. Harbor and city views the entire way.
- Tide pools: Excellent tide pool area accessible at low tide. Check tide charts before visiting.
- Old Point Loma Lighthouse: Historic lighthouse with a small museum. Free with park entry.
Trail Tips
- Hike early. Morning is cooler and less crowded — especially at Cowles Mountain which gets direct sun with no shade.
- Bring more water than you think you need. San Diego sun and dry air dehydrate you faster than expected.
- Wear sun protection. Even on overcast mornings, UV exposure is significant at these latitudes.
- Presidio Park is the only option walkable from Old Town. Mission Trails and Cabrillo require a car or rideshare.
- Download AllTrails for real-time trail conditions and GPS navigation. Both Mission Trails and Cabrillo are well-mapped.
- Check tide charts before visiting Cabrillo tide pools. Low tide (1.5 ft or lower) is required for the best experience.
