Coronado: Calm Water, Easy Access
Coronado has a unique advantage โ San Diego Bay on one side with flat, protected water, and the Pacific Ocean on the other with gentle surf. This makes it one of the most versatile water sports spots in the San Diego area, especially for beginners and families.
The bay side (Glorietta Bay) is where you go for paddleboarding and kayaking. The ocean side (Coronado Beach) is where you surf. And the ferry connects you to downtown San Diego for whale watching, charter fishing, and harbor cruises without needing a car.

Paddleboard & Kayak at Glorietta Bay
Glorietta Bay is the go-to spot for paddleboarding and kayaking in Coronado. The bay side is protected from ocean swells, making it beginner-friendly with flat, calm water. You get views of the Coronado Bridge and downtown San Diego skyline while paddling.
- Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available at Glorietta Bay from local outfitters.
- The bay is shallow near shore โ great for families with younger kids who want to try SUP.
- For a longer paddle, head south along the bay shore toward the Silver Strand.
- Morning before 10 AM is the sweet spot โ calm water, fewer people, better light.
Surfing at Coronado Beach
Coronado Beach is one of the most beginner-friendly surf spots in the San Diego area. The waves are gentle and consistent, the bottom is sandy (no rocks or reef), and the beach is wide with easy water entry. If you have never surfed before, this is an excellent place to learn.
Experienced surfers will find Coronado too mellow โ head to Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, or La Jolla for more challenging waves. But for beginners and intermediates, Coronado is ideal.
Ferry & Bay Cruises
The Coronado Ferry is both practical transportation and a scenic water experience. It connects the Ferry Landing in Coronado to Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego โ about 15 minutes each way with panoramic views of the skyline, Coronado Bridge, and harbor activity.

Fishing from Coronado
You can fish directly from Coronado โ the Ferry Landing pier is a popular spot for casual anglers, and surf fishing is available along Coronado Beach and Silver Strand. No license is required for pier fishing in California.
For charter fishing, San Diego Harbor has multiple operators running half-day and full-day trips. They are easily accessible via the Coronado Ferry or a short drive across the bridge. Species include yellowtail, halibut, bass, and seasonal tuna offshore.
- Ferry Landing pier fishing is free and no license required โ bring your own gear or buy basic tackle nearby.
- Surf fishing along Silver Strand can produce corbina, perch, and halibut. A California fishing license is required for beach fishing (anglers 16+).
- San Diego Harbor charter operators run half-day trips starting around $75-120/person. Book in advance for summer weekends.
- The ferry makes it easy to access San Diego Harbor charters without needing to drive or park downtown.
Nearby Water Activities
Coronado is compact, so some water activities are better accessed from nearby areas. The good news is that nothing is far โ San Diego Harbor, Point Loma, and Mission Bay are all within 15-25 minutes.
- Whale watching: Operators depart from San Diego Harbor (15 min via ferry). Gray whales December-April, dolphins year-round. Tours run $35-60/adult.
- Cabrillo tide pools: At Point Loma, 15-20 min from Coronado. Excellent tide pools at low tide, plus hiking trails and a lighthouse. Entry $20-$35/vehicle.
- Mission Bay water sports: Jet skis, wakeboarding, and sailing are available at Mission Bay (20-25 min north). More high-energy water sports than Coronado offers.
- La Jolla kayaking: Guided kayak tours through the La Jolla sea caves (30 min north). A unique San Diego experience worth the drive.
