Getting Around Downtown San Diego

SAN airport, MTS Trolley, Coronado ferry, bike share, rideshare tips, and why downtown is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Diego.

📍 Downtown San Diego, CA✏️ Updated March 2026🚗 Transportation guide

SAN Airport

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is one of the most convenient airport-to-city connections in the country. It's about 10–15 minutes from downtown by car or rideshare — you can literally see the planes landing from parts of the Embarcadero.

Best choice for most visitors: SAN (San Diego International). It's incredibly close to downtown. Uber/Lyft from the airport to Gaslamp or Little Italy is quick, easy, and affordable. No need for a rental car if you're staying downtown.

Walking Downtown

Downtown San Diego is highly walkable — most attractions are within 15–20 minutes on foot. Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, the Embarcadero waterfront, Petco Park, and the Convention Center are all connected by flat, well-maintained sidewalks and paths.

You can walk to...

  • Gaslamp Quarter to Little Italy (~15 min)
  • Gaslamp to Embarcadero waterfront (~10 min)
  • Little Italy to Convention Center (~20 min)
  • Petco Park to USS Midway (~15 min)

Use transit or rideshare for...

  • Balboa Park (~10 min by car/trolley)
  • Old Town (~10 min by trolley)
  • La Jolla (~15 min by car)
  • Coronado (~15 min by ferry)
💡
No car needed downtown. If you're staying in Gaslamp, Little Italy, or the Marina District, you can walk to almost everything. Save the rideshare for day trips to Balboa Park, La Jolla, or other neighborhoods.

MTS Trolley

The MTS Trolley is downtown's best public transit option — three lines (Green, Blue, Orange) serve the area with frequent stops. The Green Line connects the Convention Center area to Santa Fe Depot and beyond. You can buy tickets at station machines or use the PRONTO app.

Use the PRONTO app for tickets and real-time tracking. Single rides are around $2.50; day passes are available for unlimited rides.

Coronado Ferry

The San Diego Bay Ferry is the best way to get from downtown to Coronado — faster and more fun than driving across the bridge. It departs from the Embarcadero (Broadway Pier and Convention Center) and runs frequently throughout the day.

Rideshare, Bikes & E-Scooters

Uber and Lyft are widely available downtown with short wait times. Rides within downtown typically cost $8–$15. For shorter trips, bike share and e-scooter rentals are everywhere and great for covering the Embarcadero waterfront or getting between Gaslamp and Little Italy quickly.

Major events spike prices — use MTS Trolley instead

⚠️
Comic-Con and major event weeks: Rideshare prices spike significantly during big downtown events. Use the MTS Trolley instead — it runs right through downtown and avoids the surge pricing entirely.
