Downtown San Diego isn't a hiking destination β€” it's urban. But the Embarcadero waterfront walk is scenic and several miles long, Balboa Park has trails and free green space about 10 minutes away, and the nearest real hiking at Cabrillo National Monument and Mission Trails Regional Park is only 15–20 minutes by car.

The best outdoor activity that isn't beach or hiking is the harbor promenade or a ferry ride to Coronado. Both are free or very affordable and walkable from downtown.

Embarcadero Waterfront Walk

The Embarcadero is downtown's best outdoor experience β€” a scenic waterfront promenade stretching several miles along San Diego Bay. You'll pass the USS Midway Museum, public art installations, Embarcadero Marina Park, and harbor views with sailboats and naval ships. It's flat, paved, and walkable any time of day.

Balboa Park

Cabrillo National Monument

Cabrillo National Monument is at the tip of Point Loma, about 15–20 minutes by car from downtown. It's the closest real hiking from downtown and worth the drive β€” the Bayside Trail offers panoramic views of the harbor, downtown skyline, and Coronado. Tide pools at the base are excellent at low tide.

Entry fee applies per vehicle. The park also has a historic lighthouse and exhibits on the area's natural and military history.
