Trail Tips for Mission Valley, San Diego

  • Hike early. Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain are noticeably quieter and cooler before 9 AM โ€” better experience all around.
  • Bring more water than you think you need. San Diego sun and dry air dehydrate you faster than expected, especially on exposed trails like Cowles Mountain.
  • Rattlesnakes are present on Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain trails, especially in warmer months. Stay on the trail and watch where you step.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat โ€” most trails near Mission Valley have limited shade, particularly the upper sections of Cowles Mountain and North Fortuna.
  • Use the AllTrails app for real-time trail conditions, user photos, and GPS routing โ€” Mission Trails and Cowles Mountain are well-mapped on it.
  • The San Diego River path is the easiest option if you just want some fresh air without a full hike โ€” flat, paved, and right in Mission Valley.
