Ocean Beach and Point Loma have one of the best airport connections in Southern California. San Diego International Airport (SAN) is right next door.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is about 15 minutes from Ocean Beach in normal traffic. It's the obvious and best choice. Short drive, easy access, and you're at the beach fast.

About 6โ€“8 miles from OB. Normal traffic: ~15 minutes. Rush hour: 20โ€“30 minutes. This is the closest airport and the one you want. Uber/Lyft from SAN to OB is typically $15โ€“$25. Rental cars are available at the airport terminal.

Do You Actually Need a Car?

A car is helpful for exploring the broader OB/Point Loma area but not strictly necessary if you stay central in Ocean Beach. Newport Avenue, Dog Beach, the OB Pier, and the main beach are all walkable from most OB vacation rentals.

If you want to visit Cabrillo National Monument, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, or Shelter Island, a car makes things much easier. For trips to other San Diego neighborhoods like La Jolla or downtown, you can use Uber/Lyft.

MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) buses serve Ocean Beach and Point Loma, connecting you to downtown San Diego, Old Town, and other neighborhoods. Service is decent for a San Diego beach town, though a car or rideshare is still more convenient for most visitors.

MTS Bus Service

MTS operates bus routes through OB and Point Loma. Routes connect to downtown San Diego, Old Town Transit Center (where you can transfer to the Trolley light rail), and other neighborhoods. Fares are typically $2.50/ride. Check the MTS website or Transit app for current routes and schedules.

Bike Rentals

OB is very bikeable โ€” the neighborhood is relatively flat and compact. Bike rentals are available locally and are a great way to get between Dog Beach, the pier, Newport Avenue, and nearby areas. Biking avoids the parking headaches entirely.
