More Nature Than You Expect from a Beach Town
OB and Point Loma sit on a peninsula surrounded by ocean, cliffs, and bay β which means the outdoor options go well beyond the beach. Sunset Cliffs has dramatic cliff-edge trails with some of the best sunset views in San Diego. Cabrillo National Monument offers short hikes with lighthouse history, tide pools, and panoramic harbor views. And Point Loma is a great base for day trips to Torrey Pines and Mission Trails Regional Park.
Most of the local trails are free. Cabrillo has an entry fee ($20β$35 per vehicle), and the nearby parks are either free or low-cost.

Trail Tips for OB & Point Loma
- Hike early. Sunset Cliffs and Cabrillo are both noticeably quieter before 9 AM β better light, easier parking, cooler temps.
- Bring more water than you think. The coastal sun dehydrates faster than expected, even when it feels mild.
- Sunset Cliffs is the best sunset trail in San Diego β arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunset for the best colors.
- Check tide charts before visiting Cabrillo tide pools. Best within one hour of low tide.
- Cabrillo closes at 5 PM sharp. Plan accordingly if you want time for both the lighthouse and tide pools.
- For Torrey Pines, arrive before 9 AM on weekends β the parking lot fills early and the reserve closes to new cars when full.
