Airport & Getting Here
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is your airport. It is about 15-20 minutes from Uptown by car or rideshare — one of the most convenient airport-to-neighborhood connections in any major city.
| From | Distance | Drive Time | Best Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAN Airport | ~5 mi | 15–20 min | Uber/Lyft ($12–$20) |
| Downtown SD | ~3 mi | ~10 min | Uber/Lyft or MTS |
| Old Town | ~3 mi | ~10 min | MTS trolley or bus |
| LA (via I-5) | ~120 mi | ~2 hrs | Drive or Amtrak Pacific Surfliner |
Do You Actually Need a Car?
Uptown is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Diego. Most restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and Balboa Park are reachable on foot from Hillcrest or North Park. This is a genuine advantage over most other San Diego neighborhoods.
You only need a car if you want to explore the beaches, do day trips to La Jolla or Coronado, or cover a lot of ground quickly. For a weekend focused on Uptown itself, you can easily skip the rental.
Skip the car if...
- Staying in Hillcrest or North Park and exploring on foot
- Focused on Balboa Park, restaurants, and nightlife
- Comfortable with Uber/Lyft for occasional trips
- Using bike share or e-scooters for short distances
Get a car if...
- Planning day trips to the beach, La Jolla, or Coronado
- Want to explore multiple San Diego neighborhoods
- Traveling with kids or lots of gear
- Visiting during Pride and want flexibility with parking
Walking & Biking
This is how most guests get around Uptown. The neighborhoods are compact, sidewalks are well-maintained, and the distances between Hillcrest, North Park, and Balboa Park are genuinely walkable — not just technically walkable.

Bike Share & E-Scooters
Bike share and e-scooter options are everywhere in Uptown. They are practical for covering slightly longer distances — North Park to Hillcrest, or getting to Balboa Park from University Heights. The terrain is mostly flat along the main corridors.
Public Transit
MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) bus and trolley lines serve Uptown well — better than most San Diego neighborhoods. Several bus routes run through Hillcrest and North Park connecting to downtown, Old Town, and the coast.
| Route / Service | Areas Served | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MTS Bus Routes | Hillcrest, North Park, Downtown, Old Town | Multiple routes with regular service |
| MTS Trolley | Downtown, Old Town, Mission Valley | Connect via bus from Uptown |
| Bike Share | Throughout Uptown | Docked and dockless options available |
| E-Scooters | Throughout Uptown | Multiple providers, app-based |
Use the Transit app or Google Maps for real-time MTS tracking. Fares are $2.50/ride with the Pronto card.
