La Jolla Itineraries

One full day, weekend getaway, family week, and couples escape β€” day-by-day plans for every La Jolla trip type.

How to Pace a La Jolla Trip

La Jolla is compact enough that one full day covers the Village and main coves easily β€” but slow enough that guests who rush through it feel like they missed something. The Village walk, La Jolla Cove seals, and the Coast Walk Trail at sunset are the core. Torrey Pines and La Jolla Shores deserve their own half-day each.

Most guests come for weekend getaways, family beach weeks, or romantic couples trips. The itineraries below reflect those trip types based on what works best for each.

One Full Day in La Jolla

One full day covers the Village and main coves easily. This is the core La Jolla experience β€” everything that makes it different from other San Diego neighborhoods is accessible on foot from the Village.

AM
Morning β€” Village & Cove
Morning

Walk Girard Avenue and Prospect Street β€” the Village. Browse the galleries, see MCASD from the outside, get breakfast at Richard Walker's or a Girard cafe.

Mid-AM

Walk down to La Jolla Cove. Watch the seals and sea lions on the rocks. If conditions are calm, snorkel β€” gear rental is available nearby. The water inside the Cove is protected and clear.

PM
Afternoon & Evening
Lunch

Prospect Street β€” pick any of the ocean-view restaurants. Puesto La Jolla for tacos, or Nine-Ten for something more substantial. The view is the meal.

Afternoon

Children's Pool overlook for more seal viewing (check seasonal closure Dec 15–May 15). Walk the cliff promenade from Children's Pool north past the Cove.

Sunset

Coast Walk Trail β€” start north of the Cave Store and walk the 0.6-mile bluff path. Sea lion and ocean views. The hidden-gem anchor of any La Jolla day.

Dinner

Back on Prospect Street for dinner with a view. Book ahead for weekends.

Weekend Getaway (2 Days)

The most common La Jolla trip type. Day 1 covers the Village and coves; Day 2 slows down with La Jolla Shores and Birch Aquarium before the Coast Walk Trail sunset.

1
Village, Coves & Dinner
Morning

Village walk β€” Girard, Prospect, MCASD. Breakfast on Girard.

Late AM

La Jolla Cove seals and snorkeling. Children's Pool overlook.

Afternoon

Kayak tour to the sea caves (La Jolla Kayak or Everyday California). The "only in La Jolla" moment.

Evening

Coast Walk Trail at sunset. Dinner on Prospect Street.

2
Shores, Aquarium & Torrey Pines
Morning

La Jolla Shores β€” wide beach, gentle waves, facilities. Best morning beach in La Jolla.

Late AM

Birch Aquarium β€” worth it, especially after seeing the marine life underwater.

Afternoon

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve if time allows β€” 3+ miles of trails through rare pines and cliff-edge views.

Evening

Casual dinner near the Shores or back in the Village.

Family Beach Week

La Jolla Shores is the best family base β€” gentle waves, year-round lifeguards, restrooms, and a big parking lot. For a family week, anchor each day at the Shores in the morning and add one activity in the afternoon.

βœ“
Best family days: Morning beach at La Jolla Shores (gentle waves, lifeguards). Afternoon at Birch Aquarium. Seal watching at Children\'s Pool overlook. The Village walk when the kids need a change of scene. Coast Walk Trail is stroller-accessible in sections.

For families with kids, one full day covers the Village and main coves. A second day at La Jolla Shores with a Birch Aquarium afternoon is the natural follow-on. The rest of the week can mix La Jolla beach days with wider San Diego day trips β€” Balboa Park and the Zoo are 20 minutes away.

Couples Escape

La Jolla is one of the best couples destinations in Southern California β€” the combination of ocean views, good restaurants, and scenic coastal walks hits the right notes for a romantic trip. The first day is Village walk + La Jolla Cove + Prospect Street dinner with ocean views. The hidden-gem anchor is the Coast Walk Trail at sunset.

For 2–3 days, add a morning snorkeling session at the Cove, a kayak tour to the sea caves, and a Torrey Pines walk for variety. Finish evenings on Prospect Street β€” the view from any outdoor table at golden hour is the La Jolla experience at its best.

The Hidden Gem Anchor β€” Coast Walk Trail at Sunset

The Coast Walk Trail at sunset is the thing guests remember most from a La Jolla trip β€” and the thing most guests who don't know about it miss entirely. It's a 0.6-mile bluff path starting north of the Cave Store on Coast Blvd. Sea lions on the rocks below, ocean in every direction, the cliff-face of the sea caves visible from above.

It's free, accessible, and rarely crowded at the right time (30–45 minutes before sunset on weekdays, or first thing in the morning). If you only add one thing to your itinerary based on this guide, make it this.

βœ“
How to do it: Park at a Village garage with the LJVMA pass. Walk to the Cave Store on Coast Blvd. Start the Coast Walk Trail heading north from just past the Cave Store. Walk 20–30 minutes out and turn back when the light peaks. Free, no reservation, no equipment needed.
