💡 The main Moonlight Beach parking lot fills early in summer. Arrive by 10 AM or use street parking nearby.

Lunch in Cardiff or Leucadia

Drive or walk to Cardiff-by-the-Sea for Seaside Market (local institution) or head north to Leucadia for a funkier, artsy vibe with taco shops and casual spots along the highway.

San Elijo Lagoon Trail

Walk the easy-to-moderate trails at San Elijo Lagoon — 7+ miles of trails with excellent birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Multiple trailheads with parking at the Nature Center. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a good loop.

💡 Bring binoculars if you have them. The lagoon supports over 185 species of birds.

Sunset at Coastal Bluffs

Return to the coast for sunset. The bluffs above Swami's or Moonlight Beach offer wide Pacific views. Grandview Beach in Leucadia is another uncrowded option with a great vantage point.

Dinner

End with dinner in Encinitas or Cardiff. Ocean-view patios along Highway 101 with waves crashing are the iconic NCC dining experience. Pacific Coast Grill in Cardiff offers oceanfront views.

Oceanside Pier Morning Walk

The longest wooden pier on the West Coast. Walk the pier for wide views up and down the coast, then explore the growing downtown scene around the pier and harbor area.

Oceanside's food scene is growing fast, with solid options around the pier area and downtown. Craft beer is strong here too — several breweries within walking distance.

Batiquitos Lagoon Trail

Easy 1.3+ mile trail along the north shore of Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad. Great for birdwatching (185+ species), picnic tables, dawn-to-dusk access. Leashed dogs welcome.

💡 This is one of the most accessible lagoon walks in NCC — flat, scenic, and rarely crowded.

Lunch in Carlsbad Village

Return to Carlsbad Village for a casual lunch. The village has walkable restaurants and beach access within a few blocks.

Cedros Design District (Solana Beach)

Drive south to Solana Beach for the Cedros Design District — boutiques, galleries, home design shops, and cafes in a walkable stretch. Worth visiting even if shopping isn't your main thing.

Fletcher Cove Beach

Solana Beach's compact cove beach with tidepools. Relaxed local vibe, good for a late afternoon dip or tidepool exploration at low tide.

Final Dinner

💡 The fire rings at Moonlight are designated only — no portable fire pits. Arrive early to claim one on summer weekends.

Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Walk

Easy flat trail along the lagoon — great for kids who can walk a mile or more. Birdwatching, picnic tables, and leashed dogs allowed. A nice break from the beach that still feels like nature.

Carlsbad Flower Fields (March–May) or Beach Sunset

If visiting in spring, the Flower Fields are spectacular and kid-friendly. Otherwise, return to the beach for a sunset walk along Carlsbad or Tamarack Beach.
