NCC isn't just beaches β€” four coastal lagoons, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve just south of Del Mar, and bluff walks along the coast give you genuine outdoor variety without driving far from your rental. The lagoons are the hidden stars: flat trails through protected wetlands with some of the best birdwatching in San Diego County.

All trails are free or very low cost. All have options for beginners and people who want a real workout. And the lagoons are genuinely beautiful in a way that's easy to overlook when you're focused on the beach.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Torrey Pines sits just south of Del Mar and is close enough for any NCC guest to visit easily. The reserve protects the rarest pine species in North America and has multiple trails with dramatic sandstone cliffs, eroded formations, and sweeping Pacific views. It's one of the most scenic natural areas in San Diego County.

San Elijo Lagoon

San Elijo Lagoon is one of NCC's best outdoor spots β€” a protected coastal wetland between Cardiff and Solana Beach with 7+ miles of easy-to-moderate trails. It's genuinely special for birdwatching, with multiple trailheads and a Nature Center with parking and interpretive displays.

The trails range from flat boardwalk sections to gentle hillside paths with lagoon views. Best in early morning when light is good and birds are most active. Low tide exposes mudflats that attract herons, egrets, and shorebirds in numbers.

Leashed dogs are welcome. Dawn-to-dusk access. No fee. This is the lagoon walk to do if you only have time for one.

Coastal Bluff Walks β€” Best Free Sunset Views

The coastal bluffs in Solana Beach and Del Mar offer easy walking with ocean views β€” not full hikes, but genuinely scenic walks that are free and uncrowded. The Del Mar bluffs near Powerhouse Park are especially good for sunset. Solana Beach bluffs connect to Fletcher Cove beach access.

Free street parking at both. No crowds on weekdays. Arrive 20 minutes before sunset for the best light.
