NCC's Four Coastal Lagoons & Bluffs

North County Coastal has four main lagoons โ€” San Elijo, Batiquitos, Buena Vista, and Agua Hedionda โ€” each offering a different outdoor experience. These are where locals go when the beaches are too crowded: quieter, full of wildlife, and completely free (or nearly so).

Combined with the coastal bluff walks in Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Encinitas, NCC offers some of the best nature experiences in San Diego County without the crowds of La Jolla or the intensity of Torrey Pines (which is also close enough to visit).

โœ“
Best first visit: San Elijo Lagoon for hiking (start at the Nature Center), or Batiquitos Lagoon for an easy flat walk with great birdwatching. Both are free and require no planning.

San Elijo Lagoon

The best hiking in NCC. San Elijo Lagoon offers 7+ miles of easy-to-moderate trails with multiple trailheads. The terrain winds through coastal sage scrub, wetlands, and open grassland with views of the lagoon and occasional ocean glimpses.

Best forHiking, birdwatching, running
  • Start at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center for trail maps and parking.
  • Over 200 bird species recorded โ€” bring binoculars for winter and spring migratory seasons.
  • Multiple trailheads allow you to customize distance and difficulty.
  • Great for wildlife viewing โ€” herons, egrets, and hawks are common sightings.
๐Ÿ’ก
Best time to visit: Early morning during winter or spring migration is the peak birdwatching experience. The lagoon is quieter than any NCC beach and the wildlife activity is remarkable. It costs nothing.

Batiquitos Lagoon โ€” Carlsbad

The most family-friendly lagoon trail in NCC. An easy 1.3+ mile trail along the north shore with picnic tables, benches, and excellent birdwatching โ€” 185+ species have been recorded here.

  • Flat, paved trail that works for all ages and fitness levels.
  • Picnic tables available โ€” bring snacks and make a morning of it.
  • Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail.
  • Dawn-to-dusk access. Best bird activity in early morning.

Buena Vista Lagoon

Located on the Carlsbad/Oceanside border, Buena Vista Lagoon is primarily a birdwatching destination with trails on the border area. Public access for guests is more limited compared to the other lagoons, but it's worth a stop if you're in the area and interested in birding.

  • Birdwatching and limited trail access along the lagoon border.
  • Less developed for visitors than San Elijo or Batiquitos.
  • Best combined with a visit to nearby Carlsbad or Oceanside beaches.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon โ€” Carlsbad

The water sports lagoon. Agua Hedionda is where you go for kayaking and paddleboarding in NCC โ€” calm lagoon water that's far more beginner-friendly than ocean conditions. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation manages access and offers education programs.

Best for first-time kayakers: The calm lagoon water means no ocean swells or currents to worry about. The Foundation offers kayak and paddleboard options with wildlife viewing โ€” a great family activity that pairs well with a Carlsbad beach day.

Coastal Bluff Walks

NCC's coastal bluffs offer some of the best free walking and sunset viewing along the San Diego coast. The elevated vantage points also make them excellent for seasonal whale watching.

Solana Beach Bluffs

Easy walking paths with ocean views. Quieter than Del Mar with a local feel. Great sunset spot.

Del Mar Bluffs

Elevated walks above the beach with village access. Best combined with a Del Mar Village stroll along Camino del Mar.

Swami's Blufftop Park (Encinitas)

The park above the famous surf break. Benches, ocean views, and watching surfers below. Free and iconic.

Torrey Pines (near Del Mar)

Just south of Del Mar. Multiple trails through rare Torrey Pine habitat with dramatic ocean and canyon views. Day-use parking fees.

๐Ÿ’ก
No sea caves like La Jolla: NCC's coastline is different โ€” wide sandy beaches and bluffs rather than dramatic sea caves. If sea caves are on your list, La Jolla is the place for that. NCC's strength is the lagoons and blufftop walks. Marine protected areas follow standard no-take rules (no fishing or collecting in reserves).
