Getting Around Pacific Beach & Mission Beach

Airport info, bikes, scooters, buses, rideshare, and whether you actually need a car โ€” everything you need before you arrive.

๐Ÿ“ Pacific Beach, San Diego, CAโœ๏ธ Updated March 2026๐Ÿš— Transportation guide

San Diego International Airport (SAN)

SAN is the only airport you need to think about. It's close, convenient, and well-connected to Pacific Beach.

โœ“
SAN to Pacific Beach: about 15 to 20 minutes by car in normal traffic. Uber and Lyft from SAN are quick and typically run $15 to $25. No need to rent a car at the airport unless you're planning to explore beyond the beach area.

The airport is right on the bay โ€” you can see it from Mission Bay. There's no freeway slog or hour-long transfer. You land, grab your bags, and you're at the beach in under 20 minutes. That's one of the real advantages of staying in PB.

Do You Actually Need a Car?

The honest answer: probably not, if you're staying near the boardwalk and keeping your trip beach-focused. The PB/Mission Beach boardwalk connects everything walkable, bike rentals are everywhere, and Uber is cheap for short hops.

A car helps if you want to explore Mission Bay (it's spread out), do day trips to La Jolla, downtown, or Balboa Park, or if you're hauling gear for a group. But for a relaxed weekend on the beach, you can skip it.

โœ“ Skip the car if...

  • Staying near the PB or Mission Beach boardwalk
  • Focused on beaches, bars, and boardwalk life
  • Comfortable with Uber/Lyft for occasional trips
  • Happy biking or scootering along the coast

โš‘ Get a car if...

  • Planning day trips (La Jolla, Torrey Pines, downtown)
  • Exploring Mission Bay with gear
  • Traveling with kids and lots of stuff
  • Staying for a week and wanting flexibility

Parking heads-up: If you do bring a car, parking in PB is tight โ€” especially in summer. Residential permit zones are everywhere. Read every sign or risk a ticket. See our Parking Guide for details.

Bikes & Electric Scooters

Biking is genuinely the best way to get around PB and Mission Beach. The boardwalk is flat, paved, and runs the full length connecting both neighborhoods. Multiple rental shops line the boardwalk with beach cruisers, e-bikes, and tandems.

Public Transit (MTS Buses)

MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) buses serve Pacific Beach and Mission Beach with connections to downtown San Diego, Old Town, and other neighborhoods. Bus service is functional but not fast โ€” most visitors find Uber easier for anything beyond the immediate area.

Rideshare (Uber & Lyft)

Uber and Lyft work great in Pacific Beach โ€” drivers are readily available, wait times are typically 5 to 10 minutes, and fares within the area are cheap. It's the easiest way to get to and from the airport and for nighttime trips on Garnet Avenue.
