San Diego's Giant Aquatic Playground

Mission Bay is 4,600 acres of calm, protected water surrounded by parks, paths, and recreation areas. It's the largest man-made aquatic park in the country, and it sits right next to Pacific Beach and Mission Beach — making it the perfect complement to the ocean beaches.

The bay is where locals go when they want flat water for kayaking, paddleboarding, or just floating without fighting waves. Families love it for the gentle swimming areas at Crown Point and Sail Bay. The bike paths connect the entire bay and are flat, scenic, and stroller-friendly.

Worth it for families

Best for families: Mission Bay is the family-friendly counterpart to the ocean beaches. Calm water, playgrounds, and Belmont Park make it ideal for kids of all ages.

Mission Bay Park

Mission Bay Park wraps around the bay with miles of bike and walking paths, picnic areas, playgrounds, and boat launch ramps. It's one of the best urban park systems in San Diego and it's all free to use.

  • Bike/walking paths — Several miles of flat, paved paths connecting parks and beaches around the bay. Great for bikes, strollers, and joggers.
  • Picnic areas — Grass areas with tables and grills along the bay paths. First-come, first-served. Best spots fill early on summer weekends.
  • Playgrounds — Multiple playground areas scattered around the bay, including near Crown Point and along the eastern shore.
  • Basketball courts & open fields — Available at several park locations around the bay.
  • Boat launching — Public boat ramps available for kayaks, paddleboards, and motorized boats.
💡
Best picnic spots: The grass areas along the bay paths on the east side of the bay are less crowded and have great water views. Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends for the best spots with shade.

Belmont Park

Belmont Park sits right at the edge of Mission Beach and is the classic boardwalk amusement park — the Giant Dipper roller coaster (a wooden coaster from 1925 that's still thrilling), arcade games, a wave pool, mini golf, and food options.

Check seasonal hours

Belmont Park is a solid rainy-day option too — the arcade and indoor attractions give you something to do when the beach isn't cooperating. It's also a great evening activity after a day on the bay.

💡
Worth it? The Giant Dipper roller coaster is genuinely fun and historically significant. The rest of the park is standard boardwalk fare — fun for families, good for an hour or two, but not a full-day destination on its own.

SeaWorld San Diego

SeaWorld sits right on the edge of Mission Bay. For families with kids, it's worth a full day — the rides, animal encounters, and shows are solid. Ticket prices vary by date, and buying online in advance saves money.

The park combines marine animal exhibits with thrill rides and shows. It's evolved beyond the old orca-show format into a more modern theme park experience. Adults without kids may find a half-day is enough, but families easily fill a full day.

⚠️
Tickets: Buy online in advance — walk-up prices are significantly higher. Look for multi-day passes if you're spending more than a day in the area. Parking is a separate fee.

Insider Tips

  • Morning is the best time for paddleboarding and kayaking on the bay — the water is flat and calm before the afternoon winds pick up.
  • Crown Point and Sail Bay have the calmest water for swimming with kids — gentler entry and shallower than the ocean beaches.
  • Fiesta Island is the spot for off-leash dogs and windsurfing/kiteboarding. It hosts the Over-the-Line Tournament in July.
  • The bike paths around Mission Bay are flat and scenic — rent bikes on the boardwalk and explore the entire bay in a few hours.
  • A car helps for getting around Mission Bay (it is big), but the boardwalk area connecting PB and MB to the bay is very walkable.
  • Parking at Mission Bay Park is generally easier than the ocean beaches. Free lots are available at several points around the bay.
