PB Is About the Beach β€” But There Are Outdoor Spots Worth Knowing

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are flat, coastal, and built for the sand-and-surf lifestyle. You won't find trailheads in the neighborhood itself. But Kate Sessions Memorial Park has some of the best views in San Diego, the Mission Bay bike path offers miles of easy scenic riding, and two of the region's best hiking areas are a short drive away.

Whether you want a quick park visit with panoramic views, a relaxed bike ride around the bay, or a proper trail workout, here's what's worth your time.

Torrey Pines & Mission Trails

Kate Sessions Memorial Park

Kate Sessions Park sits on a hillside above Pacific Beach with panoramic views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the downtown San Diego skyline. It's not a hiking trail β€” it's a grassy hillside park β€” but it's one of the best viewpoints in the area and worth the short drive from the beach.

Great for a quick visit, photos, a picnic, or just sitting in the grass with a coffee and taking in the view. Free parking and free entry. The park is named after Kate Sessions, the horticulturalist who planted much of Balboa Park's trees.

Mission Bay Bike & Walking Paths

Mission Bay is a 4,600-acre aquatic park surrounded by miles of flat, paved paths perfect for biking, walking, jogging, or rollerblading. The path loops around the bay and connects parks, picnic areas, and beaches β€” it's scenic, easy, and genuinely fun to ride.

You can rent bikes right on the boardwalk in PB or Mission Beach and ride from there into the bay path system. E-bikes are available too if you want to cover more ground without the effort. The PB/Mission Beach boardwalk itself is also a flat, paved path that runs along the ocean for about two miles.

Nearby Trails Worth the Drive

If you want real trail hiking, two excellent options are about 20 minutes from PB by car. Both are worth a half-day trip and offer experiences you won't find on the flat coastal terrain.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (~20 min north)

Stunning coastal bluff trails with ocean views, eroded sandstone formations, and rare Torrey Pine trees. The Guy Fleming Trail and Razor Point Trail are both short, easy, and spectacular. The Beach Trail descends to a beautiful stretch of undeveloped coastline. Parking is $15–$20/day at the reserve lot β€” arrive before 9 AM on weekends.

Mission Trails Regional Park (~20 min east)

One of the largest urban parks in the country. Cowles Mountain is the most popular hike β€” a moderate climb to the highest point in San Diego with 360-degree views from the summit. The Father Junipero Serra Trail is longer and quieter with river and canyon scenery. Free parking at multiple trailheads.

Outdoor Tips for Pacific Beach

  • Start early for Torrey Pines and Cowles Mountain β€” both get crowded by mid-morning on weekends and parking fills up fast.
  • Bring more water than you think you need. San Diego sun and dry air dehydrate you faster than you expect, especially on exposed trails.
  • Sunscreen is essential even on overcast mornings. The marine layer burns off quickly and you can get sunburned before you realize it.
  • For Mission Bay biking, rent bikes on the boardwalk in PB or Mission Beach. E-bikes are available if you want to cover more ground.
  • Use the AllTrails app for trail conditions and GPS routing β€” Torrey Pines and Mission Trails are both well-mapped on it.
  • After a morning at Kate Sessions Park or a bay bike ride, grab breakfast at Kono's Cafe on Garnet β€” it's an institution.
