The Honest Truth About Pacific Beach Parking

Parking in PB and Mission Beach is tough โ€” especially in summer. Free street parking is limited and strictly enforced with residential permit zones everywhere. Paid lots at Belmont Park, Tourmaline, and Grand Avenue fill early on weekends. The boardwalk area in Mission Beach is especially brutal from June through August.

The good news: there are strategies that work. If your rental property has parking, use it and walk or bike to the beach. Arrive early for lot parking. And Mission Bay has free parking at multiple access points if you are flexible about which beach you hit.

โš ๏ธ
Summer weekends: Belmont Park lot and Tourmaline lot fill by mid-morning on summer Saturdays and Sundays. Street parking near the boardwalk is nearly impossible. If you are sleeping in, plan for Mission Bay lots or arrive after 4 PM when day visitors start leaving.

PB Boardwalk Area Parking

The boardwalk area between Crystal Pier and Belmont Park is the most popular stretch and the hardest place to park. Here is how to approach it:

Strategy 1: Use Your Property Parking

If your rental property includes parking (most of ours include space for 1โ€“2 cars), use it. Walk or bike to the beach from your place. This is by far the easiest solution and what most smart guests do. Check your booking confirmation for parking details.

Strategy 2: Arrive Before 8 AM

Early arrival is the most reliable way to get lot or street parking near the beach. Before 8 AM on summer weekends, spots are available at the paid lots and on nearby streets. The morning light and uncrowded sand are a bonus.

Strategy 3: Arrive After 4 PM

Day visitors start leaving in the mid-afternoon. By 4โ€“5 PM, spots open up near the beach. If you are planning a sunset session or dinner on Garnet Avenue, arriving later avoids the worst of the parking competition.

๐Ÿ’ก
Street parking near the boardwalk: Metered and free street parking exists on some blocks, but time limits and residential permit zones are everywhere. Read every sign carefully. Enforcement is active โ€” especially on summer weekends. Getting a ticket is common for visitors who do not check the signs.

Mission Beach Parking

Mission Beach boardwalk parking is brutal in summer. The Belmont Park lot is the main option โ€” it is the largest paid lot in the area and is right next to the boardwalk and amusement park. It fills fast on summer weekends, so plan to arrive early.

Street parking in Mission Beach is extremely limited. The streets are narrow, residential permit zones are everywhere, and enforcement is consistent. Do not park in a permit zone without a valid permit โ€” you will get a ticket.

โœ“
Bike or walk from PB: If you are staying in Pacific Beach, the boardwalk connects PB and Mission Beach. It is a flat, easy walk or bike ride. Skip the car entirely and ride down the boardwalk โ€” you will save yourself a lot of frustration.

Mission Bay Parking

Mission Bay is the easiest parking situation in the PB/MB area. Free parking lots are available at multiple access points around the 4,600-acre bay โ€” near picnic areas, boat launches, and park entrances. This is where locals go when the beach lots are full.

Bay backup plan: When beach parking is impossible, drive to one of the Mission Bay lots. Crown Point and Sail Bay areas have calm, family-friendly water and free parking. It is a different vibe than the ocean beach but equally enjoyable.

Insider Tips

  • Download PayByPhone before you arrive โ€” it is the most common parking payment app in PB/MB. Add your license plate and card in advance so you are not fumbling at the meter.
  • Bikes avoid parking entirely. Rent a beach cruiser or e-bike on the boardwalk, park your car at your property, and ride to wherever you want to go. The boardwalk and bay paths are flat and easy.
  • Read every parking sign carefully. Residential permit zones are everywhere in PB and Mission Beach. Enforcement is active and tickets are common for visitors who do not check.
  • For dinner on Garnet Avenue on a weeknight, free street parking opens up significantly after 6 PM as daytime beachgoers leave.
  • If the beach lots are full, drive to Mission Bay. Free lots around the bay almost always have availability, even on summer weekends.
  • If your property has parking for 1โ€“2 cars, that is your best asset. Use it as your base and walk, bike, or rideshare to the beach and restaurants.
