Mission Bay is a 4,600-acre aquatic playground with calm water for every kind of water sport. The ocean beaches offer surfing and fishing. Between the bay and the beach, you could spend your entire trip on the water.

Must-Do

Kayak & Paddleboard on Mission Bay

Calm, flat water perfect for beginners and families. Rentals are available through operators along the bay — kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats. Crown Point and Sail Bay are the most popular launch spots.

Thrill

Jet Ski & Boat Rentals

Jet ski and motorboat rentals are available through Mission Bay operators. The bay is large enough to really open up and enjoy the ride. Check with operators for pricing and age requirements.

Surf

Surfing at Mission Beach & Tourmaline

Beginner-friendly surf breaks at Mission Beach with lessons and rentals available along the boardwalk. Tourmaline Surf Park in North PB is a dedicated surf spot (no swimming) with mellow waves popular with longboarders.

Fishing

Crystal Pier Fishing

Fish right from Crystal Pier — no fishing license needed for pier fishing. Bring your own gear or check with local shops. It is a classic PB experience with ocean views while you wait for a bite.

Family

Belmont Park — Giant Dipper Roller Coaster

The historic Giant Dipper roller coaster at Belmont Park is a must-ride. The park also has an arcade, laser tag, and other rides. Free entry — you pay per ride. Open daily.

Iconic

Crystal Pier Walk

Walk out on Crystal Pier for free — it is a public wooden pier with ocean views in every direction. One of the best sunset spots in PB. There are also vacation rental cottages on the pier itself.

💡
Mission Bay tip: The bay is huge — 4,600 acres. If you are renting kayaks or paddleboards, ask the operator for recommended routes based on your skill level and how much time you have.

Outdoors & Nature

PB and Mission Beach are flat and coastal — the terrain is more beach than backcountry. But there are outdoor spots worth knowing, and real hiking trails are a short drive away.

Kate Sessions Memorial Park

A hilltop park above Pacific Beach with panoramic views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the downtown San Diego skyline. Not a hiking trail — it is a grassy park — but the views are stunning and it is worth a quick visit. Free parking and free entry. Great for photos and picnics.

Mission Bay Bike Path

Miles of flat, paved path looping around the 4,600-acre bay. Perfect for biking, jogging, or walking. Rent bikes on the boardwalk and ride through PB, Mission Beach, and around the bay. E-bikes are available if you want to cover more ground.

Nearby Trails (~20 min drive)

For real hiking, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (north) has stunning coastal bluff trails with ocean views. Mission Trails Regional Park (east) has Cowles Mountain — the highest point in San Diego with a popular summit hike. Both are worth the drive for a half-day outdoor adventure.

Best local tip: Rent bikes on the boardwalk and ride the Mission Bay path loop. It is flat, scenic, and connects parks, beaches, and picnic areas around the entire bay. A couple of hours of easy riding with great views.

  • Walk or bike the boardwalk. The PB/Mission Beach boardwalk runs along the ocean for about two miles. Flat, paved, and open 24/7. Best in the early morning or at sunset.
  • Sunset from Crystal Pier. Walk out on the public pier and watch the sun set over the Pacific. Free, beautiful, and one of the most iconic spots in PB.

Events Worth Planning a Trip Around

PB and Mission Beach have a handful of annual events that are genuinely worth building a trip around — or at least knowing about so you can plan for parking and crowds.

June

PB Street Fair

One of the biggest street fairs in San Diego. Garnet Avenue shuts down for live music, food vendors, and local art. Expect crowds and parking challenges — walk or bike if you can.

July

Over-the-Line Tournament

A uniquely San Diego beach softball-on-sand tournament held on Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. Part sport, part party, fully a local tradition. Fun to watch even if you are not playing. Expect big crowds and a rowdy, festive atmosphere.

July

Comic-Con Spillover

San Diego Comic-Con fills downtown in late July, and the spillover energy reaches PB. Expect higher demand for accommodation, more people in the area, and lively bar scenes on Garnet.

Year-round

Belmont Park Events

Belmont Park hosts seasonal events and activities throughout the year. The Giant Dipper roller coaster and arcade are open daily. Check their website for special events during your visit.

Summer

Beach Volleyball & Surfing

The summer months bring organized beach volleyball leagues and surfing events to PB and Mission Beach. The energy on the beach ramps up significantly from June through August.

Jan–Mar

San Diego Restaurant Week

City-wide dining event with prix-fixe menus at restaurants across San Diego, including spots on Garnet Avenue. A good excuse to try somewhere new at a fixed price.

⚠️
PB Street Fair and Over-the-Line make parking especially brutal. If your visit overlaps with either event, plan to walk, bike, or rideshare. Street closures and crowds are significant.
