PB, Mission Beach & Mission Bay: Water Sports Central

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach sit between the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay โ€” a 4,600-acre aquatic playground. That gives you ocean waves for surfing on one side and calm, flat water for kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet skiing on the other. It is one of the best water sports setups in Southern California.

Whatever your skill level, there is something on the water that fits. Surfing at Mission Beach and Tourmaline is beginner-friendly. Mission Bay is perfect for kayaks and paddleboards. Crystal Pier is a classic spot for fishing. And whale watching tours run from downtown, just 10 to 15 minutes away.

Surfing in Pacific Beach & Mission Beach

PB and Mission Beach have some of the most beginner-friendly surf in San Diego. Mission Beach has gentle, consistent waves with board rentals and lesson operators right on the boardwalk. Tourmaline Surf Park in North PB is a dedicated surf spot (no swimming allowed) popular with longboarders โ€” mellow waves and a relaxed local vibe.

๐Ÿ’ก
Wetsuit tip: Water temperatures run 59 to 68 degrees from fall through spring โ€” a wetsuit makes a big difference. In peak summer (July through September), many surfers go without one. Rental shops include wetsuits with board rentals.

Best Surf Spots

  • Mission Beach โ€” Gentle, consistent waves. Best for beginners and lesson groups. Boardwalk shops rent boards and offer lessons.
  • Tourmaline Surf Park โ€” Dedicated surf-only spot in North PB. Mellow waves, longboard-friendly, no swimming allowed. Locals love it.
  • PB Main Beach (near Crystal Pier) โ€” More variety in wave size. Good for intermediate surfers. Check conditions before paddling out near the pier.

Lessons & Rentals

Surf lessons and board rentals are easy to find along the Mission Beach boardwalk. Group and private lessons are available โ€” boards and wetsuits are included. Morning slots fill fastest in summer, so book ahead if you have a specific day in mind.

Kayak & Paddleboard on Mission Bay

Mission Bay is one of the best kayaking and paddleboarding environments in Southern California โ€” 4,600 acres of calm, flat water with no surf to worry about. Rental operators along the bay offer kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and pedal boats. Crown Point and Sail Bay are popular launch areas.

Best spot for beginners: Crown Point and Sail Bay have the calmest water on Mission Bay โ€” no boat traffic in the swimming and paddling areas. Ideal for first-timers and families with kids. The water is shallow near shore and warms up nicely in summer.

Jet Ski & Boat Rentals

Mission Bay is large enough for jet skiing and motorboating โ€” something you cannot do in the ocean surf. Rental operators on the bay offer jet skis, pontoon boats, and other motorized watercraft. The bay gives you plenty of room to enjoy the ride with scenic views of the surrounding parks and skyline.

  • Jet ski rentals are available through operators along Mission Bay. Check for age requirements โ€” most require riders to be 18+.
  • Pontoon and motorboat rentals are great for groups who want to cruise the bay at their own pace.
  • Summer is the busiest season. Booking ahead, especially for weekend rentals, is recommended.
  • No boating license is typically required for bay rentals โ€” operators provide a brief orientation before you head out.
๐Ÿ’ก
Bay vs. ocean: Mission Bay is calm, flat water โ€” perfect for motorized rentals. The ocean is for surfing and swimming. If you want to ride a jet ski, the bay is where you go.

Fishing in Pacific Beach

Crystal Pier is the classic fishing spot in PB โ€” walk out on the public pier, drop a line, and fish with ocean views all around you. No fishing license is needed for pier fishing in California, which makes it easy and accessible for everyone.

  • Crystal Pier โ€” No license needed. Bring your own gear or check with local bait and tackle shops. Open to the public during pier hours.
  • Deep-sea charters โ€” For serious fishing, charter boats run from downtown San Diego harbor (10 to 15 minutes from PB). Half-day and full-day trips target yellowtail, bass, halibut, and more.
  • A California fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older fishing from boats or shore (pier fishing is exempt).
  • Pier fishing is free and a great family activity โ€” kids love the experience of fishing over the ocean.
โœ“
Crystal Pier tip: Early morning and late afternoon tend to be the best times for pier fishing. The pier can get crowded on summer weekends, so weekday mornings offer a quieter experience.

Whale Watching

Whale watching tours run from downtown San Diego, which is about 10 to 15 minutes from Pacific Beach. Tour operators depart from the harbor and head out along the coast where whales migrate through seasonally.

Downtown San Diego harbor-based tour operators run daily trips during peak whale season. Check with operators for schedules, pricing, and booking. Morning trips tend to have calmer water. The drive from PB to the harbor is quick โ€” 10 to 15 minutes by car or Uber.

๐Ÿ’ก
Good to know: Whale watching is better from downtown San Diego tours than from PB itself. The harbor-based operators have larger boats, experienced naturalists on board, and head to the areas where whales are most consistently spotted.
